𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭: old time period, mention of arranged marriage, polygamous marriages, slow-burn yandere, power imbalances, peer pressure, nothing major atm, mentions of infertility, etc.
𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: "you were the apple of Sukuna's eyes, the one who brought him solace and everything. The only thing you were incapable of was giving him a child, an heir he wished to spoil like he did to you."
𝐚/𝐧: splitting this into two parts, leaving y’all on a cliffhanger. pls like, comment below for tagging, and reblogged. (edit: forgot there were "broken" links or something when clicking to find the chapters, those are also fixed too.)
𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭
In front of you were two boxes, one that was gunpowder with a bold black label written at the top of the crate, and the other was written in potassium chlorate. You notice that these two items share similar fates but different structures. "Handle with care," you instructed, snapping the fan in your hand shut. Walking off with shoulders squaring, your eyes trail around when you stop right in the center of the trading post. You finally owned a small port that allowed you to transport essential items from different countries. From using the money, the inn has accumulated over time.
All the time you've spent inside your room, stuck reading boring materials and trying to navigate into the world as a man, was brutal. You would never have the luxury and freedom as a woman, but you've become too accustomed to dressing up as a man. It doesn't mean you let yourself fall freely. This world wasn't built for women; you've always known that from the start, although that doesn't stop you from bending the rules to your will if you wish for it. The effects of reinforcing you into roles from everyone start to wear off when there isn't anyone keeping tabs.
And it feels liberating, you admit.
The first few steps you have taken for yourself without the help of anyone powerful give you a sense of clarity—something normal among the norms. You eye the small port, seeing the future play out in front of you. If you kept a steady trade of items from the small shops, you have gambled around the area for their compliance (you were hasty, something you ought to keep in check, too), then the port would grow big in no time. But quality wares is something you noted and took from the vendors you think would make it big if they produce what you're looking for. Owning important essential items or daily use objects was often sought out, and knowing what was going on in the market with the ledgers you kept, the vendors were happy to update it every week.
The smell of sea salt brushes against your nose when a spray mist of the ocean settles across your face like a thin veil. It brought you back from reality. The dark soft fur that clings around your neck tickles your jawline. It was a cape that had a lined coat inside for heat insulation. It was a gift to you from the seamstress. At first, you refuse such a gift as you weren't expecting anything in return but their devotion. The seamstress was an elderly lady named Rue with pure grey hair with specks of white, with milky pupils who ran the shop with her granddaughter, who was the age of fifteen. For someone blind, they have an impeccable sense of design, where to thread their needle, and even hand spin the silk threads with deer tail fur to tone down the bright arrogant colors.
Last but not least, you didn't bypass her as male.
You wonder how at first, Rue could tell, but you couldn't stop them from shoving their hands all over your face to see as further confirmation. It isn't until when you're alone that she sends her blushing granddaughter, who keeps gawking at you, to fetch warm jasmine tea from the kitchen. When she breathed out how the light footsteps and breathing differed from men, the soft scent of your natural smell under the musk of pinewood wasn't enough to fool her. Years of blindness hone her other senses.
To say you give a nervous smile even though Rue can't see, but she could sense it. You remember how she didn't ask questions about your true identity, but traces of understanding was written across her withering face. Rue was indeed an enigma and a master of changing the topic onto herself with woos of stories of her ambitious youth. You don't mind her rambling; as long as it's not you divulging into your life, then you're fine.
Readjusting the cape, you walk off the port onto the mainland, and before you can go any further, a woman who is a bit tad shorter than you bumps into you. They let out a yelp and seemed to trip over their heel as they braced for impact when falling back and shut their eyes. Based on reflexes, you grab their wrist to pull them upright, but all it does is wring their weight your way as they collide into your chest with a delicate sound of discontent.
"Hey! Watch where-" The words died on their lips when they opened their soft pomegranate-colored eyes. Their eyes almost remind you of someone. As if they couldn't utter a word after nearly insulting you, the shade of their face became gradually warmer, like the colors of their eyes. "I'm sorry!" They sputter out in nervousness. You only look down at her with your questioning piercing gaze that has her even weaker in your arms. Unknowingly. Ripping themself out of your hold, she set a space between you both.
"What are you sorry for? It was my fault for not seeing you." Simply reassuring her, the woman across from you became a more blubbering mess. You don't know what's going on in her head; the more you observe, it becomes a headache to decipher each passing second. Cutting her off, you notice the sky gradually getting darker and bid her farewell with a tilt of your head down.
It wasn't until that you were gone she allowed herself to bask in the memories of you. With both hands on her flaming cheeks, she gushes over her Prince Charming and starts to create scenarios in her head. "They were so cool!~" The aura around her was warm and pleasant, and even some bystanders who walked past her glanced at her—some young love.
"Lady Kiriko!" The young woman's handmaid finally reaches her as they huff and pant. They stop in front of her. Kiriko only clicked her tongue in distaste as she lost her sense of a heart-warming aura. "I finally found you! We have to go to the inn before it gets dark." The handmaid wheezes out.
Like a flip that has been switched, Kiriko activated her brat mode. "Why do you always have to ruin my fun?" She pinches the maid's arm harshly, and they cringe back. "I still have a bit more time left before sundown." Kiriko overlaps her arms, but her thoughts trail back to you, and then brat mode is switched off. She had a deluded smile on her face. Then again, it was back on instantly when she turned around to her maid. "By the way, did you see a handsome man on your way here? They walk where the way you came from."
The handmaid crinkles her brows in confusion.
Kiriko rolls her eyes, "You know about this tall?" She gestured to where your height would reach, which is a head taller. "They wore a cape in the color of brown, but it looked like gold with intricate design, and the neck had soft black fur surrounding it." Kiriko waited a few more seconds, "And they look adorable too."
The maid then snaps their eyes at the lady, "Ah yes! I saw them; they walked into a rented house near here!" Kiriko didn't waste time asking which house the handsome man rented, and the maid told her it was the Red Koi and sped away.
Eisha coughs as the weather gets colder and harsher. With the months flying by and winter coming, she tried to stifle another hack. "Where are the imported red coals?" She asked nearby maids, who gave each other a look, deciding who would break the news. They were a jittering mess and kept avoiding eye contact.
Eisha's lady-in-waiting ensured her Master was comfortable as she brought the finest furs and pillows to create a sturdy and warm nest. "Your Lady asked you a question, and you won't answer her?" The personal maid sternly made a face, and the lowly ranked servants quivered.
"The red coals that you requested were given to Lady (Name)," one spoke up, still refusing to make eye contact; they whispered the last part in a hush, "by Lord Sukuna's order."
As if what they said were whiplash to their Lady and the personal maid, Eisha's lady-in-waiting was about to blow a fuse for her Master. "All dismiss." She tried to say calmly. Although it was barely contained, all the servants could see how Eisha's handmaid eyes bled red with rage, and no one wasted a second to flee the room. If Hell existed, it would be this very castle.
Eisha's handmaid, Miyo, turns to their master. "Your Lady, even Lord Sukuna knows about your condition and that regular coals could suffocate your lungs and worsen it with the amount of smoke it emits." Miyo then curses you inside her mind; like everyone else, she couldn't understand why Lord Sukuna would put you above all else. Are you made of gold or something? Miyo was sure you were nothing; you hadn't made yourself worthy with a single childbirth. Something that everyone knew was important.
"Don't worry about it," Eisha's quiet demeanor made Miyo even more raucous, but she held it inside. "Go to the clothing department today and pick up my lined fur fleece and my daughter from her study." With the command, Miyo respectfully now to Eisha and left the room.
There was a quick and sudden announcement from Hanami about her niece visiting her from a different region of Japan in a week. So the Doom Mother (Motherzilla) had expected everything to be perfect and lavish. Even the concubines were putting on their best behavior as they discussed what to wear to welcome their mother-in-law's niece.
This was the first time the girl would make an official trip to visit Hanami alone. But that doesn't mean you haven't heard of her before; there were brief mentions of her throughout your marriage to Sukuna. Where Hanami had plotted the idea of her only son marrying a cousin with who he had no interest. Additionally, Sukuna only met her once when she was only eight. Even the age gap was a decade between them. In the faint memory of her ten years ago, Sukuna had said she was a spoilt brat to the brim and expected the world to bow down to her.
You could almost laugh at how ironic he was judging someone when he was the same way. Well, minus the spoilt parts, then it would be perfect.
"Lady (Name)," a lady you recognize was two years older than you, was part of Hanami's entourage, Ubi. Judging by her clothes, she was in the second rank, closely behind Hanami's vassal, Naiyu. This instantly made you put on an air of neutrality; you didn't know what to expect from her as you didn't know much about her. Out of all of Hanami's retainers, only Ubi and Naiyu were the ones you watch out for, as Ubi was specially trained under Naiyu, so their facade was perfect craftsmanship.
Since they both represent Hanami's strengths, they had to be fearless in what they do, and you suspect that much—being the blade for their master. Still, they have shown indifference toward you, but doubt lingers in your mind. You can be careful and wary of them, but that would invite your demise if you failed to see beyond, so you try to harden your eyes.
Ubi, who senses you putting up barriers, instantly tries to disarm it with a soft smile that is part of her service. "The Head Mother has requested your presence," and around you, the air of jealousy and envy from concubines rises through the roof and filters through the hallways. Whether it's deliberate or not, Ubi semblance never falters. She held onto that patience.
"Lead the way," you monotonously said, and she turned around for you to follow. Starting at her back, it's unsettling how you can't pick what's happening inside Ubi's head, unlike how you did with Sukuna. For them, it's a blank slate.
"Ugh, look at her acting like she's so important just because the Head Mother had called for her," Sena whispered with hidden jaundice around her little clique, and they all agreed. One rolls their eyes, and a few sniggers at the action. Her eyes trail close to where you left.
It took a few minutes to lead you to Hanami's residence.
"Head Mother, I have brought Lady (Name) as per your request," Ubi announces, and the door slides open. She side steps to the side to allow you in without looking up.
You enter the room with quiet steps and sit on the zabuton, and before you can bow as a greeting, she lifts a hand to stop you. "There's no need." Hanami tries to mask her displeasure at seeing you, and you weren't stupid to not see it. It's just you didn't bother to point it out. Since she has an important matter to discuss and it involves you, Hanami decides to make it quick so your face isn't a constant reminder of your Aunt.
Hanami: "You're going to take over on welcoming my niece."
You: "Pardon? Isn't that supposed to be Lady Eisha's role?"
"Yes, it is," Hanami spoke as a matter of fact, "due to her ailing health, this task might be arduous for her since the doctor has told her to stay warm, so Eisha is taking bed rest to recover. Thus I'm assigning this to you."
Well, this is news to you. Out of all the people she could've picked, she had chosen you for such a task. You would have thought she might select one of the lower concubines to do the job. With her blatant prejudice against you. "Wouldn't any other concubine be better for the job?"
"Are you shrinking your role as the second wife of my son?" Hanami blurts out in annoyance as her tone rises an octave high; she looks up and down at you repeatedly with quick eyes. Like, you have gone crazy for even suggesting that.
With lips service smile, you retort back politely, "Head Mother, you seem to be offended by my innocent question. I'm only asking since you seem to tolerate my presence barely, let alone we haven't spoken to one another within five years of being married to your son. The only time we spoke was, instead, very brief and short, two days after the wedding consummation." It was the first greeting for the mother as a new in-law from the wife or concubine as respect.
Hanami clenches her jaws tightly; your sharp tongue and dim-witted acting seem to prick her nerves. You and your Aunt are very much alike in some ways, unbearable and arrogant. "Are you going to refuse my order?"
"Ah no," you quickly reply, "that would bring shame if I didn't uphold my duty as the second wife of Sukuna and Lady Eisha's left hand too."
Hanami didn't know if what you said was pure mockery, but each passing second in this room with you got her blood pumping in anger. "Since you have understood, you're dismissed."
You courteously bow deliberately (on purpose) to bid farewell before standing up with grace. Hanami was sure you were playing with her; your ungenuine smile wasn't even hidden. She curses daily due to her son's favoritism of you; you're like a plague that never vacates. And have you grown uncouth that you don't even respect her?
"Lord Sukuna, Lady (Name) will be taking over Lady Eisha's task of welcoming your cousin in a few days," Uraume informed their master, who quirked a brow.
"Oh? So that brat of a cousin is visiting?" He asked no one in particular; it was more of saying it to himself out loud. "Mother has finally given her such an important task for once." The thought of his Mother warming up to you sounds so funny that he can't help but chuckle. His Mother barely tolerates the idea of you and loathes Sukuna himself for a self-evident reason sometimes. "Make sure my wife doesn't overwork herself and help her if necessary; I'll tend to her afterward."
Uraume silently left the room, and Sukuna mulled over his thought. He rests his temple against his knuckles and watches the candlelight flicker under a breeze. But in his spare hand was a familiar thick jewel; Sukuna toys around with a gold bangle with assorted gems in various sizes, colors, and labyrinth designs indented into the gold.
It was your bangle.
After the night he had spent with you, he took what's most precious to you, and it was what was given to you by your deceased parents. There were years of work on it, seeing how the inside of the jewel was fading away from constant use. Sukuna noticed how the clasps were loose, most of all when he kept twisting the bangle around to feel every rigidity and bump.
The more he looks at it, the more something seems off.
Sukuna barely saw small noticeable lines on the inside of the bracelet; it was in the shape of a square. A small hidden compartment; if his keen and trained eyes missed that tiny detail, he deserved to be killed on a battlefield for not seeing an enemy, ambush, or assassination. Still, Sukuna was curious and grabbed a small wooden toothpick to unlock the small door.
He was surprised when multiple seeds fell out of the bracelet when he shook them out onto the table. The color of the sources was rather old, seeing how raisin and dried they were. Something stirs in his chest, and he doesn't like it. Sukuna's fierce eyes were glaring at the jarring sight before him. Cold like Hell has washed over.
"Someone, go and fetch me the doctor. Right. Now." His voice was low, with his wrath was barely concealed through clenched teeth. "Now!" Sukuna repeats their voice bellows out from his room to outside when no one makes a move to move. One male servant scamps away to do what they're told out of fear.
You're crafty. He gives you credit for that; whatever you're hiding, he would sniff it out. Sukuna then set the jeweled bracelet down and ran a hand through his hair; he puffs out a shallow breath. He's barely an anxious man, but his opinions of you and your sensitive nature slowly etched their way into his mind as he started to pick them apart one by one in a logical sense.
When emotions run high, clouds of judgment obscure his views. Sukuna is a man led by ideals and a futuristic sense; scarcely emotions ever run by him. He knew deep down when he allowed himself to feel emotions, it would cause him trouble, and he was right. Few selected people could be worthy of his regard, but to him, it didn't change his output of you very much. He dislikes being blind by someone, even so, he fully lets himself be when it comes to you, but seeing differently from a different angle, Sukuna should know that you're not soft and malleable.
You're like glass, pretty in the light, but there are still sharp edges around it. You shouldn't be underestimated. When he thought he had you at the center of his palm, you find a way to slip away. The game of chase was a back-and-forth thing, with its up and down.
Sukuna took another breath and exhaled deeply, pushing away the negative introspections.
You were busy interacting and directing where everything should go the next few days. It almost felt like a routine when you were dressed up as your alibi, Seijuro Hajime. Your breath fogs up in front of you, and your nose itches when cold air brushes against it; turning your head to the side, you sneeze.
"You should dress up warmer for the occasion," a voice snuck up behind you, and you froze for a quick second when a heavy cape was draped around your shoulders. Sukuna had made his presence known, and the servants around you suddenly worked harder than before. You were about to shrug off his cape, but his hands were on your shoulders, "Keep it on."
Another moment of pregnant silence passed through; no servants bothered to be in your and Sukuna's line of sight. They make sure to steer clear away from the invisible bubble that was presented around their Lord of the House. Sukuna presses his broad front against your back; you can feel his heat seeping through, then he slides his hands down your shoulders until it reaches your cold hands. His callous palms envelopes your own, and there was a minor battle of you struggling to tug it away.
"Could you please let me do my job," you patronize Sukuna, who only takes it as amusement and doesn't move an inch.
"No, I came here to spend time with my lovely wife." He tunes out, and his voice is much lighter, much chirpy to your liking. "Do you want to know what I discovered today?"
"No," flatly refusing him, one of Sukuna's hands retracted for a second, and you felt something cold and heard a slight click on your wrist. You look down to see your bracelet that has gone missing adorned your wrist. Toring yourself away, you whirl around to meet his eyes; you accuse him with a quiet, burning, seething look, "So it was you who took it."
The corners of his lips quirk up. You have spent days looking for your precious bangle, even flipping your room upside down. You didn't think it was this menacing man in front of you swiping it right under your nose during that day he had forcefully bedded you. You even thought that you lost it during your outing to the castle and that anyone could pick it up and pawn it to set themselves up for life.
"It was a pretty little thing; I know it was a special gift to you from your parents. So I took it as an inspiration to see your taste, as you never wore what I gifted. " Sukuna explains while lazily giving you a nonchalant expression without losing his carefree nature. He lops his head to the side, "And here's the fun part, I fixed your little bracelet problems for you."
You clench your jaws and roll your eyes again with a deep breath, "There's nothing wrong with it."
"No, no, no," Sukuna tuts out as if he's dealing with a lying child, "There is a problem with it. You, my lovely wife here, have been plotting something bigger against me this whole time." The light in his eyes darkened and was replaced with something entirely devious. Mentally preparing yourself, Sukuna brushes his knuckles against your cold, bitten, ample red cheeks. "There are many things I've been tolerating from you," Sukuna's tone reeks of hurt and betrayal, despite failing to mask it, "but not this."
The hand caressing your cheek was suddenly behind your nape; Sukuna grips, and for once, he didn't care how he made you look in front of his servants, who were surprised at his treatment. Many hold their breath and further avoid the personal bubble as they could see trouble brewing between you both. All we're opting the long way to complete their task.
"You know I always wanted a child with you, but seriously, basil seeds?" Sukuna let out a haughty laugh when he saw your expression crumble a bit from fear of realization that he knew. "Yes, I now know what has caused your infertility."
The smile he wore never seemed so big and scary in front of you. Your mind was repeatedly reeling that Sukuna knew. He. Knew. Now you're not safe, and you can no longer avoid his advances.
Sukuna could see the vulnerability displayed before him; this was what he was waiting for. You're so open for him to take and relish. "I admire the length you're willing to go, and honestly, I genuinely do." You don't know what will come out of his mouth anymore. "No one can save you from me now. Not even your precious bracelet."
[Days Ago]
Sukuna patiently waited for the physician to arrive at his headquarters while drumming his fingers against the dark red oak table. His eyes trail to your bracelet that sticks out like a sore thumb, along with the seeds. The doors to his room snap open as the physician enters. "Finally," Sukuna said out loud; he has patience, but not today.
The doctor stopped in front of Sukuna and greeted him with a bow. "Lord Sukuna, w-what seems to be the problem?"
The man smirked, "You always seem to tremble whenever you meet me, but never mind that," Sukuna motioned with his head where the bracelet and seeds lay, "Tell me what is on the table." The physician saw and quickly took action.
They took a seed and examined it before sniffing it, and a faint scent emitted. "My Lord, this is basil seed."
Sukuna: "Basil?"
"Yes, basil." They confirmed it.
"What's so special about it?" Sukuna asks with interest.
"Lord Sukuna, basil seeds are used for many things, and especially if consuming it, doing it in small quantities once in a while not to cause side effects. Too much may cause bloating and abdominal pain. This is also used to help... " The medic explains in tangent detail.
"Then explain why it was inside the bracelet." Sukuna cuts to the chase when asking about something the doctor does and tends to run their mouth sometimes.
"A-Ah, yes." He took the bracelet from the table, "May I ask who the bracelet belongs to?"
Sukuna: "(Name)."
The doctor should not be surprised it was you. They took a moment to examine the bracelet and saw the open compartment door and sniffed the inside of the bangle, and found traces of it. "My Lord, how long has Lady (Name) worn this bracelet?"
The sound of urgency in his voice caught Sukuna's interest. "For as long as I married her. It was from her parents. What's the problem?"
Since there was no time stamp on how long, the doctor could only conclude one thing, "If Lady (Name) has worn this for a long time, then the cause of her infertility could be this all along." The words are like a cold wake-up call from the doctor; Sukuna's eyelids droop low with fury. The thought of you, 'How dare you (Name).' The doctor nervously continues, "Long exposure to basil seeds entering the bloodstream could thin out the blood, affect her hormones, and even her menstrual cycles. This could also explain—"
Sukuna raised a hand for the medic to shut their mouth as he was complimented on how he should deal with you and what he had just learned today. At first, he took your bracelet to understand your personal preferences, then return it to you later, and now he doesn't regret stumbling onto your long secret by chance. The amount of time he had bed you and you failed to conceive a child was out.
"You're dismissed, and keep your mouth shut." Then he looks at the corner where Uraume resides, "Take the bracelet to get it modified from a nearby jeweler. Fix the clasps and seal the door."

The steel industry was distinguished from other industries by a number of factors. The first, of course, was the large size of its plants and the sizable amount of capital invested in each location, something by which virtually every commentator has been struck. As Horace Davis notes, "American steel makers have astonished the world not only by the size of their furnaces and mills but by the way they scrapped an old plant before it was worn out, in order to build a bigger one". In addition, the industry, especially compared with wood, coal, and textiles, was distinguished by the concentration of ownership, which can be seen from Table 4.3. The top ten producers accounted for 84% of the steel capacity in the United States. While U.S. Steel was clearly the dominant firm in the industry, its sway was most important in western Pennsylvania and the Midwest. On the East Coast, it was Bethlehem that had the largest share of production. This horizontal combination was not based exclusively on the technical requirements of the industry. As Davis notes, even relatively smaller producers were sufficiently large and well capitalized to be at the vanguard of technical innovation and productivity in their plants. Rather, it was the need to control the market, prices, and ultimately profits that led to the increased concentration of ownership. The push for this concentration came from the banks and financiers who quite literally controlled the industry. Because of the need for large amounts of investment capital, Morgan financial interests not only controlled U.S. Steel, but had important interests in Bethlehem and other companies. Mellon interests had a major influence on many independents, while Mark Hanna's banking empire had important control over Republic Steel; also in evidence were the fingerprints of financier Cyrus Eaton, who by 1927 had become the major shareholder in the newly reorganized Republic Steel.
There was also little worry that the federal government would find any of these relations a violation of federal anti-trust laws. Some have suggested that capitalist influence on governments in capitalist societies is indirect, a result of societal "logic," not direct or, as they would say pejoratively, "instrumental." Such criticisms are mostly unfounded when one looks at the influence of the steel bourgeoisie: much of the federal government does indeed appear to be, in Marx's words, their "executive committee." Davis examines these ties in detail and they are indeed rather lurid. Philander C. Knox, the U.S. attorney general when U.S. Steel was formed in 1901, was the former chief council for Carnegie Steel Corporation and an intimate of Henry Clay Frick, a prominent USS director. When Knox was replaced (to become secretary of state), it was by George W. Wickersham, previously USS's attorney. Another former attorney for USS, Elihu Root, had preceded Knox as secretary of state. Secretary of the Navy was a position also filled by several former USS officials. When U.S. Steel received a tax rebate of 96 million dollars, it was Pittsburgh steel financier Andrew Mellon who was secretary of the treasury, who okayed the deal, supposedly guarding Americans' taxpayer dollars. These connections are just a titillating sampler. Of course, it is perhaps arguable that these connections were really secondary, and the welfare of USS was just part of the accepted ethos of ruling class America. Such is a legitimate conclusion that one might have drawn when the Supreme Court, in what Davis calls a "coat of judicial whitewash," exonerated USS for anti-trust violations, the imprimatur being given by the highly liberal judge Oliver Wendell Holmes, whose bleeding heart went out to USS.
The bigger employers controlled a large percentage of the raw material and related product industries. U.S. Steel, for example, dominated most of the Great Lakes ore in the 1930s and more than 10% of the coal resources in the entire country. Certain major companies had their own steel mills, including International Harvester, which owned Wisconsin Steel in Chicago, and Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, which even recycled old automobile parts as scrap in making steel. Thus, the fate of literally millions of workers was controlled by decisions made by banking officials and top managers in steel and steel-related industries. These companies and officials had the ability to mobilize enormous resources against any challenges to the absolute control of their labor forces.

The Neck
The heavy cotton and wool of the clothes provided for you scratched your skin, not used to being covered by thick materials. At least you were warm. The gown was a deep blue, the bell sleeves detailed with faint silver leaves that catch the light of the fire still burning hot from the night before. The cloak was a shade or two darker, and lined with thick grey fur.
Faint, but distinct, scratches remained from where Viserys' nails had grabbed you the night before. Nothing more than a minor blemish to the untrained eye, an itch scratched too hard. You wince as your hand grazes against the area, the pain has settled deep beneath your skin's surface. Violence had thickened it, you were certain bruises were more prominent in your youth.
“Well you look presentable, not perfect but certainly good enough for here,” Visery states as he enters, equally as fidgety in the clothes lent to him. He had always appeared relatively gaunt, but the sheer bulk of the northerners' clothes drowned his slender frame. “Shall we get on with it then?” he asks impatiently, eyes gazing into the mirror behind you.
“You seem in better spirits today. Eager to see me sent to market once again,” you reply.
“A small sacrifice for the greater good,” he explains
“For your greater good perhaps but what about mine,” you question
“When I am King, you will reap the benefits. Perhaps one day I will even allow you to return across the narrow sea, take claim to the lands there,”
“I do not wish to conquer Essos,”you scoff.
“Then what did you wish for? To free them?” He tuts hands ghosting over your arms “You always were serving for the higher cause weren't you, when will you learn those below us are there for a reason,”
“It’s better than you, always looking at the big picture and failing to see the minutiae necessary to get there,” you shoot back.
Visery laughs “Well one of us has to plan for something greater, and as we both know you are incapable,”
“We are expected, we shouldn't be late,” you reply, cutting the conversation short.
Your eyes squint in the bright grey light of early winter. Visery walks ahead of you, his distance giving you an opportunity to study campgrounds. Blood spatter coated the men and the smell of death clung to the air, following them home from the battlefield. You feel their eyes on you as you walk by, perhaps the Targaryen name still held some power after all, or perhaps they simply wondered who wandered freely amongst the ranks. The walk is short but still enough to chill you. If dragons thrive on heat, this place weakend you. You’re shivering when you enter the tent, a side effect of having left some skin exposed in hopes of appeasing any complaints you may face. Men were simple enough and you found attractiveness often aided and rarely hindered situations.
“Welcome, your grace,” Catlynn says as Visery enters. Pleased with the acknowledgment of his rightful title, he takes her hand and kisses it before walking towards the back of the tent. You note the look on her features, she did not trust Visery, you would not allow that distaste to rub onto you.
“My Lady,” you repeat, curtseying.
“Lady Targaryen, how was your sleep?’ she asks
``Wonderful thank you for asking, and for providing us with our own safe place to rest. It is the warmest welcome we’ve ever received,’ you state.
“Hopefully the first of many,” she replies, gesturing to you to sit down at the large oak table.
“You have a wonderful collection of books Lady Stark,'' Visery states, as Catelynn preens your hair, hoping that your appearance would do away her son's foul mood. Another had captured his heart in the span of two days, a nurse, kind hearted, strong and stubborn a perfect match for him but lacking the bloodline necessary for victory. Despite Catelynn's repetition of this, Robb refused to accept it. His whole life she had granted her eldest son every wish, it was time he learnt of compromise, and became the man he was raised to be.
“You should see the collection at Winterfell Your Grace, you are welcome to any literature brought with us. There are even some in languages unknown to us here, having left our maester at home, perhaps you can assist us Lady Targaryen, considering your past training,” As you turn your head towards the books the scratches poke out from beneath your cloak. Catelynn's blue eyes meet yours when you turn back, but there is nothing in your face to confirm her suspicions. If you needed help you did not trust her enough to ask for it.
“I would gladly assist in any way I can My Lady, I have gotten lazy in my study of the languages and it would do me well to start again,” you reply with all the charm vacant in Visery. Perhaps jealousy was why he chose to beat his only remaining relative. She turns as one of Robbs men enters, stopping dead in his tracks, his eyes fixated on you.
Catlynns words interrupted your curtsey, “That's not him my dear,” You thank the gods for that, the man was as ugly as he was terrifying. “Ser Ashford, do you come with news or have you simply entered to stare at our guest?” she asks politely, causing the man to look down towards his feet. Perhaps he was not so brutish after all considering the faint blush apparent on his cheeks.
“The King in the North sends his apologies My Lady, but he will be unable to attend, something has come up,” he states, accent thick.
“And what has come up that is more important than welcoming his wife-to-be?” Catelynn questions, her level of anger placating Visery who had loudly snapped his book shut moments earlier.
“Wife?” Ser Ashford questions looking back to you “He went to see those injured from the last battle My Lady, to aid the medics,” he replies, speaking directly to you.
“Of that I'm sure,” Catlynn punctuates, knowing he was off where he had been painstakingly stuck for the past week. “Come now Ser Ashford, shall we fetch him together? Such attractive company should not be kept waiting, don't you agree?” she queeries, the blush returning to the knights cheeks once again.
“My Lady if he is busy,” you begin, but she interjects.
“I will not allow him to disrespect you as such,”
“Amazing feat for a king to not understand the concept of time nor his own customs,” Visery mutters between his teeth as Catlynn exits the tent.
“Visery,” you scold, in a strangers camp an insult towards their king could see you both dead by morning.
Catelynn returns with a face of thunder, though she quickly masks it with a smile, not warm but not cold either. A smile of someone still trying to figure you out. She smoothes her dress before sitting down at the table, and you follow her lead, leaving Visery to judge from afar. Not five minutes later the curtains part revealing the eldest Stark.
Blood spatter had dried on his skin intermixing with the faint freckles that dusted his face. Brown curls sit atop his head, a prominent brow lifted by a steel blue gaze so sharp it cuts you to the bone when it falls on you, he was handsome, undeniably so. The fresh growth of stubble added an unexpected ruggedness to him. He was not nearly as proper and clean cut as fairytale expectations, nor as unruly and wild as Viserys description of the northmen. His eyes turn from you to Visery whose smile had dropped. Robbs gaze returns, looking down on you with disdain. You had expected disapproval but hatred was an entirely other beast. You only prayed another bout of abuse would not be coming your way.
Robbs hands raise, gesturing irritably to his mother as if to ask why he had been summoned. Catelynn's eyes bulge out, her jaw clenched evidently disapproving her son's inexcusable lack of decorum.
“I wish to thank you, My Lord” you begin, breaking the tension that clung to the air.
“Your Grace,” Robb corrects, causing you to arch your brow, slightly bemused at the pettiness.
“Robb,” Catlynn scolds
“My Lady” you interject, maintaining composure, as Robb turns back to you “I understand and I apologise, Your Grace,” you enunciate “for interrupting your duty. It is of the utmost importance to show those injured fighting for you that you have not forgotten them. I can hardly think of a more honourable reason to have been delayed, and I am not insulted in the least. I am pleased to see a leader who shows his people such care and respect. Please take your leave, I do not wish to delay you any longer,” you finish, watching as his shoulders ease as his mouth, prepared to argue further, closes.
“Am I free to go,” he asks, looking down to his mother who begrudgingly nods. She exhales as he leaves, shaking her head.
“He will soften,” she mutters.
“He need not soften, she is difficult,” Visery states, placing the book back on the shelf “A firm hand is exactly what she needs, besides they need not love each other they simply must deal with each other until Kings Landing is safely in hand.” If the Starks were looking for a reason to distrust you they would find it in Viserys words.
“And beyond that, hopefully for many years. Unless cut short Targaryen’s are long lived believe it or not,” you reply standing from the table “Lady Stark would you do me the honour of showing me the nearby woods, I fear I am in desperate need for fresh air, no matter how cold,”
“Of course, Lord Visery, please enjoy the collection of books here, may you find some use or enjoyment in them,” he nods curtley eyes looking up at the books with his chin pointed forward. You look at Jorah as you exit the tent, your eyes telling him to ensure Viserys behaviour did not surpass anything less than respectful.
“I have caused a faint trail from my own walks. I am happy to share them with someone besides my guards. The woods have helped me in recent days,” She relays as you enter the forest. The trees here were incredibly tall and dense enough to get lost forever if you did not know your way.
“They're taller than most buildings I've seen,” you remark earnestly, in awe of the beauty of the landscape surrounding you.
“They were here long before us, and will remain long after we have all gone, I hope you will come to appreciate the beauty of the cold as I have,”
“I believe I already am My Lady, frigid as it may be I have not seen this much green in my lifetime,” you relay, “Were you frightened when you learnt you were to come to Winterfell? The Starks are the only house to bear a warning after all,”
“Perhaps the only one that needs a warning,” she chuckles, “their customs are strange unlike any other I’ve encountered, more ancient. Though, fire and blood is that not also a warning,” she asks
“More a threat, perhaps a promise though I suppose the same can be said of your house, well the house you married into. Family, duty, honour, those words run through your blood Lady Stark. From the moment I met you I knew family was everything to you. Though I have never truly known family, so perhaps I am incorrect in my assumptions,” you state
“You are exceptionally well read on the houses of Westeros, though I would expect nothing less considering you learnt from the great maesters of Essos,”
“You are very kind to say so my Lady, but I must admit most of my knowledge on northern houses came as I crossed the narrow sea,”
“I offer no praise greater than I see fit, anyone capable of mastering five languages surely holds enough intelligence to adapt to new surroundings,”
“I can hardly master one language most days,” you laugh and Catelynn smiles, despite her wariness there was a sense of comfort she found in you. A sense of hope that radiated from you, one that would benefit her son and his people in the months to come as days become shorter and life harsher.
“Do you still speak valyrian?”
“Kessa,” you reply “it is my favourite, It keeps me connected to my ancestors, to my family,”
“You handled yourself well inside, I am ashamed of my son's behaviour, it is not how I raised him. I’ve never seen him like that before, not towards undeserving people,” she replies apologetically
“I have dealt with difficult men my whole life, I have dealt with bad men for times as well, I do not believe your son to be one of them. He is evidently tormented by my presence here. I only hope annoyance is not levelled to violence,” you admit.
“He is many things, stubborn and competitive, but he does not have a cruel bone in his body. He’s always been naturally protective, especially of his siblings, he came home covered in blood and bruises one day after taking on a group of boys twice his size who frightened Sansa with nothing more than a ghost story,” you see the lines on her face appear, her smile evidence of a life full of joy, happiness etched into her from time spent with her family.
“That says a lot about a man i've come to find and I hope to meet his siblings someday,” you stop in the path, taking Catelynn's hands in yours “the return of your daughters, their freedom is my priority before the throne, before vengeance, their safety comes first lady Catlynn of that I promise you,” you relay, and she inhales nodding her head, your inflection rung true, but it was not cause for trust.
“Robb will not hurt you, he may be angry now, but his bark is worse than his bite. Though if he does, even once, you find me and I will see that it never happens again,” she assures.
“Thank you My Lady, that eases my mind greatly. Would you allow me a moment to myself, I used to ride daily in the woods, but I am lacking both a horse and an ability to withstand early morning cold, and the temperature is much more favourable now”
“Of course, I will have someone to call on you in the hour, do be careful wolves roam these parts, keep an eye out for tracks,”
“Thank you My Lady, I shall,”
“You may call me Catelynn,” she offers
“Then you must call me Rhaeanya,” you reply, watching her walk back down the trail.
Catelynn turns at the forest's entrance watching as you disappear between the trees. Visery would not be the one to lead this army, the men would see through him, see his weakness. Weakness where you had strength. She admired the seemingly calm practicality you held despite your youth and supposed naivety.
You possessed a mind of your own, reading has sharpened it and made you fast on your feet, smart enough to survive in a world built for men. All the gifts that made a man a king clung to you so obviously, as it had with Rheagar, as it had with your father before his descent into madness. Where on the scale you fell she was unsure, but one thing was certain: Rheagar had not been the last dragon.
The leaves crunch beneath your feet. You inhale, gathering the sharp air into your lungs, exhaling out through your nose. You bask for a moment in the silence, but a faint blue light appears in the corner of your eye pulling your gaze deep into the woods. From the darkness you see an arm creep around a tree, fingers as long as a forearm wrapping around the bark. Stepping forward you note two yellow orbs glowing despite the brightness of the day. A twig snaps and the figure dissipates. The hood of your cloak falls as you whip around towards the sound.
“Who goes there?” you question, attempting to level the fear in your voice. “If this is another pathetic attempt at my torture Visery it is not funny, nor is very inventive considering the horrors I know you capable of,” you declare, breaths hastening as the bushes begin to rustle.
You startle back as a huge grey mass appears, larger than any predator you had seen. You straighten your back and divert your eyes looking for an escape, any escape. But you could not outrun a wolf, let alone one of this size. It walks towards you sniffing intently but its energy is entirely placid. You lift your gaze to see Robb standing between the trees. You reach your hands out slowly, allowing the wolf to sniff it, eventually resting its muzzle in your hands.
“Quite the beast you have your grace,” You state, kneeling down to come eye to eye with Greywind, “Though you look disappointed it failed to amputate my arm. I thought direwolves were long gone” you mutter.
“I thought the Targaryens were as well,” Robb grunts out.
“That was uncalled for, Your Grace,” you reply somewhat mockingly, eyes still on the Direwolf, it wasn’t often you happened upon another of a dying breed.
“If you hoped for love then you should re-evaluate your being here, it's not too late to leave,” Robb reasons
“Love? “ you laugh turning to look at him “Who said anything about love? Love is not what I seek,”
“Then why are you here?” he asks
“You think I asked to be brought to a frozen wasteland, torn away from the only place I called home? I was not brought here on my own volition my hands, like yours are tied by family and duty,” you explain standing to full height.
“Seems your family has more to gain. Charming company you keep,” he replies, calling his Direwolf to him.
“We aren’t all afforded the luxury of a large family and his ambition is no greater than yours,” You reply, your defence of Visery burning your tongue.
“Surprised he hasn’t taken you himself, considering the lineage,” he prods.
“If you wish to shock me with the atrocities of my families lineage you’ll have to do better than that,” you reply trodding up the bank, hands clutching the trees, using them to pull yourself up “if you’d done your research you would know fowler things than incest occurred during the dragon age.”
You can feel his steel grey eyes cut into you as you ascend the slope. It has been a while since you found a worthy opponent in arguments. You never had cause to bicker with the Dothraki, and Visery argued with his fists. The air was cold, and your anger at your situation made you itch for a fight, so you pushed him further.
“Who is she then?” you ask and he turns to you, hidden anger surfacing at her mention.
“Why do you plan on having her killed?” he bites.
“That’s quite the conclusion to reach after four minutes of conversation,” you relay calmly
“I wouldn’t put it past your breeding stock,” he replies tongue circling over his teeth “my mother may have forgotten what your family did to my uncle and grandfather but I have not,”
“Nor have I forgotten that your family stood by as my entire lineage was butchered in the streets,” you shoot back, eyes interlocked “Now I will excuse myself from this conversation, it seems to have reached its natural end,” you reply hitting your shoulder into his as you pass. He grabs your arm, easily spinning you back around to face him, strength greater than Viserys, but not more than Drogo.
“I will not put up with insolence,” he snarls, eyes once again boring into yours.
“If you wish to scare me back to whence I came you’ll have to try harder than the threat of violence. I’ve been hit harder by stronger men than you,” you explain calmly, before pulling yourself free, his grip loosening at your words. Though they were a lie, Visery was weak, and Drogo never violent, but you would not allow for intimidation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two days later
A banquet hall had been put up in haste, still in the throes of war, there was no need for it until now. The pristine sheets hanging along with fir branches and the last of the summer flowers were set against the blood stained soil. You glanced nervously at the structure over the past 48 hours, a dull gnawing had moved slowly throughout your body, and was currently clawing its way up your throat in an attempt to escape. By nightfall your entire body was screaming at you to cut and run.
Visery could sense your restlessness, like a horse before battle, but he had managed to keep your reigns pointed forward. The wedding dress was simple, but despite the short notice Catelynn had found a skilled hand that had taken care to weave intricate stitches along the sleeve. Dragons danced across the pale purple material, the silvers in the threads illuminating your hair, and the moonlight reflecting in your eyes.
“Do us a favour, and try not to get this husband killed,” Visery states, leading you towards the hall's entrance. “This is our last chance, no one else will have you if you fail here.”
All eyes were on you as you entered, following you as you moved towards the altar where Robb stood. All eyes save for his. You follow his gaze to a woman sitting near the back. So that was who held his heart. She could keep it for all you cared, she must know by now strategy was the only thing between you both. Candlelight warms the interior, the cold hues of the moon replaced with warm tones allowing an angelic light to settle around you.
Robb wasn’t blind, the sun had shone down on you the day you were born, a shallower man could find no flaw in you. Despite his hatred he was hard pressed to name another possessing your features, or the ability to wear them with such magnitude. He’d heard the stories of the Targaryens' beauty but he never understood why so many wrote of it until now. At another time your brashness in the woods would have intrigued him, been seen as endearing, curious even. All he could feel now was resentment, for you breaking his and Talisa's hearts. For the pain your presence caused the woman he truly loved for nothing more than a namesake, a necessary stake in a game he had started. His eyes shift to Talisa, begging for her to forgive his failures and broken promises. You looked no happier to be there. He wonders for a moment what your life had been before, what you had left behind to be here. He hardly imagined it was anything akin to his own pain.
You meet Robbs gaze for the first time since the forest. You wondered if the crowd could sense it, the hatred behind his eyes and the rage behind your own. Your old life died today, offered up for the slaughter of war. But your anger must subside if you were to be successful. Tonight you were born anew. The seven kingdoms were your families by right, and it was your duty to secure it once again, for all those dead and gone.
“You may now cloak the bride and bring her under your protection” the septar declares, as you look into the grey eyes of the oncoming storm.
Robb holds the cloak firmly, the fabric bunched between his clenched fists. The fabric remains bunched as it falls on your shoulder, its warm, heavy, comforting juxtaposing the energy flowing between you and Robb.
"My lords, my ladies, we stand here in the sight of gods and men to witness the union of man and wife. One flesh, one heart, one soul, now and forever.”
Your hand reaches out first, he takes it painstakingly. Neither of you breaking eye contact, seemingly trying to out last the other. The tension was palpable as the septar ties the rope around you both.
"Let it be known that Rhaeanya of the house Targaryen and Robb of the house Stark are one heart, one flesh, one soul. Cursed be he who would seek to tear them asunder." The voice echoes in the tent. You can feel Talisa's eyes in the back of your head "In the sight of the Seven, I hereby seal these two souls, binding them as one for eternity." You prayed eternity ended at your death or his, whichever came first.
"Look upon each other and say the words", he commands eyes interlocked in a battle, jaws clenched, hands limp only held together by the customary rope. "Father, Smith, Warrior, Mother, Maiden, Crone, Stranger.”
“I am hers…”
“I am his…”
“And she is mine.”
“And he is mine”
“Until the end of my days," you finish in unison. His eyes flit back to Talisa on the final inflection.
"With this kiss, I pledge my love," Robb tilts his head, kissing your cheek, eyes meeting Talisa, securing the promise made to her. The slight was obvious to everyone in the room, he had faulted you, touted you as undesirable. Rarely did a groom fail to seal the ceremony with a true kiss. He had marked you as wrong, shown how little love he had for you.
The feast is prepared as the rope is unravelled freeing you from each other, the septar hands it back to you for safeguarding. Robb’s half way out the tent before the rope is in your hands. He had left you alone, staring out into a crowd of unfamiliar faces.
An uncharacteristic wave of shame washes over you and you lower your head, following Robb out of the hall where the men feasted and laughed, eyes looking towards you as they do. Shame evolves into anger as you walk towards the tent, culminating when the entrance flaps close before you can enter, another slight witnessed by the masses.
You remember your first wedding and the similar sense of unknowing you had felt, but Drogo had shown you respect and honoured your words and decisions. His trust and actions towards you were later matched by his men. Had you been treated differently, as you had been tonight, your place in the khalasaar would have been more precarious.
Drogo showed his people what you meant to him, that you were one of them and that they would respect and fear you because they respected and feared him. Robb, whether intentional or not, had endangered you. You lift your head, no man, no matter how poorly dealt his hand in life was, would make you feel small. He did not have that right over you.
Finding the courage you had once had, sitting atop horseback alongside Drogo, you enter the tent preparing to fight for yourself, knowing no one else would. The hearth flickers as you enter. Illuminating Robbs' figure in the dark, you watch as he removes his gloves, undoing the strings on his shirt from the chair he sits in.
“Shall we get this over with,” he questions pulling off his boots
‘Get what over with?’ you spit, the tone enough to draw his gaze. Angelic features from the hall transformed under the fires glow. The warm hues reflecting the shadows of your face, revealing a danger not previously evident. ‘You will not touch me tonight or any night to come for the entirety of this contract that is our political arrangement’
He shifts up in his chair, eyes staring daggers at your rebuttal to his actions. Evidently he had expected you to be docile and gratefully accept the embarrassment he had bestowed upon you. You doubt he had ever been spoken to in such a manner, seen consequences of poor behaviour.
“Do you understand me? Breed your heir somewhere else I will not birth a child from such a hateful, dishonourable man,” you continue, tone level, atmosphere thunderous.
‘Dishonourable?’ he challenges.
‘Tonight you have embarrassed me in the most public of ways, not only have you marked me as something you are ashamed of, but as something disposable. To you, your family and the men you lead. You presented me as small and pitiful, speaking to my character when you had no right to do so,”
“Perhaps I didn’t wish to be associated with feral inbreds,” he shoots back, pulling his boots back on
‘I have no care for your good opinion, but they fight for you and die for you! They take your lead and you have shown them they can treat me like dirt. If you expect anyone in king's landing to back the Targaryen’s ascent to the throne they will not follow one deemed weak and worthless, as you have just made me out to be. I know you think me unimportant, but your family bartered this marriage for a reason,”
“My mother bartered this arrangement” he shouts standing to his feet, “My father…”
“Your father spared me and my brother, gave us a chance to live, on more than one…”
“My father hated the Targaryen’s,” he pushes, angered by his own petulant tone. He watches as you pull out the letter sent by Eddard to Catelynn, where he confessed to saving you the day he stormed Kings Landing.
“He was a good man,” you begin, as Robb shakes his head. “Not only was he honourable, but moral to the highest count. After his death your mother knew she needed a claim to the throne and unfortunately for us, I was the only way. Well myself or Visery and thank the gods your sisters were spared from him. You have the north, that is evident, but the iron throne you have no birth right to, so there will always be a reason for uprising. Always a reason for Lannister push back. If you want your sisters returned, anda free north then you need us, just as much as we need your army,”
“I need you,” he laughs maliciously, tossing the note to the side ‘If you think you can threaten me into loving you’ his words stop at the sound of your laugh.
‘You may think me silly and stupid but the notion of love is lost to me. I do not expect love from this situation. I am not some silly girl dreaming of princes rescuing me. I have seen skin melt off a man’s face, tongues ripped from throats, I have endured violations you will never understand so do not think for one second I am someone to be walked over, and made a fool. No love was never expected, what was… what was expected, was a respectful and honourable person as I had heard was as true of you as it was of your father. Evidently Jorah was mistaken. You are no different than any other power hungry, war mongering, would be king who takes pleasure in belittling those he deems not worthy.”
“You have no right to speak about my father like you knew him, after what your family did. I should have married Talisa when I still had the chance,”
“And I wish you had, by the gods I wish you had. Sleep with whoever you please, be in love with whomever you please I encourage it for you will not find it with me, not in this life time and certainly not in the next,” finally you exhale
“Is that all My Lady,” he punctuates sarcastically.
“Yes that is all, Your Grace,” you spit back, as he walks towards you, undeterred by your stare.
“Good, I have more pleasant business to attend to,” he whispers in your ear before exiting the tent.
REGARDING ALLIANCE WITH ROOK.
I don't intend to write out a whole cutscene for Rook and Vauquelin's first meeting. I prefer to leave that open for plotting / threading. However, I want to give a basic premise for when it happened and what was established by default.
AS SOON AS IT BECOMES apparent Fen’Harel’s ritual has gone wrong, Vauquelin moves his people back to their base and puts a watch on the Vi’Revas from the Crossroads side. They take note of the Evanuris’ agents, their spirit neighbors made refugees, what little the Caretaker can share with them — and they watch Rook. After Rook uses the Crossroads for the first time, their second foray has the Caretaker deliver a message. An agent of Fen’Harel wishes to meet them in the marketplace of the Converged City.
By default, Fen’Harel was the only one with access to the Lighthouse and the Vi’Revas. No one entered without his leave. Vauquelin doesn’t want Rook to know he’s even aware of its location right now lest that make them jumpy.
When Rook arrives, they see an eccentric figure, comfortable in his surroundings but not trying to blend in. He’s a short elf, sharp-featured, with chin-length curls. He wears heavy makeup in the Orlesian style but smudged and in bruised tones. He’s in a mockery of wealthy Orlesian dress: barefeet, silk shirt, course pants + waistcoat, and a floor-sweeping coat that’s clearly a patchwork of materials cut from other clothes. A wicked looking blade rides his hip. He makes clear gesture of setting it aside when Rook agrees to speak, and he demonstrates that he has no other arms or armor.
Several spirits at market that day are his friends, ready to defend him if this goes sideways, but Rook only needs to know that if they attack him.
He tells Rook he knows Fen’Harel’s ritual went sideways, but he’s not interested in fighting them over it. Handling the Evanuris takes precedence over all else. He lays out what he and his fellows can do for Rook: navigate the Crossroads, aid them against Evanuris’ takeover, connect their allies as their network grows. This is a negotiation, and he makes concessions to ensure they can establish a working partnership. He shows them their base, for example, and introduces them to his fellows. After all, these people will form the basis of Rook’s network. They’re all vulnerable right now, but if they work together, they might stand a chance.
Vauquelin’s “concessions” are carefully measured to make Rook feel like they have the upper hand. He doesn’t share details of their base’s security or their escape routes. He will answer questions about Fen’Harel’s agents honestly while pointing out his knowledge is limited due to them operating in cells and other such precautions against betrayal. He does not divulge that he has a way to contact a few others, but with the alliance established, he does so. Not all answer but some do and are willing to join up. You get the picture: he tips his hand but hides the cards tucked up his sleeve.
As essentially their postmaster and head of their information network, Rook will see him and his agents often. They will be able to visit the Crossroads Messengers’ base at their leisure. Neither Vauquelin nor his agents will try to push their way into the Lighthouse. By default, there is a passphrase known only to Rook and the companions. It will be their choice whether to share it. However, he usually delivers Rook & co.’s mail personally. He’s not a companion, but Rook & co. can invite him out for various things, and he may well accept. Most of his time, however, is spent at the Messengers’ base or in the Crossroads; there is much work to be done.
Bushfire Huntress
Blake and Ruby are walking through the streets of Vacuo after stopping at the market for some basic necessities.
Ruby: How do you think Yang and Weiss are doing on their mission with Coco and Velvet?
Blake: I’m sure they’re doing fine, but I am a little worried. Coco said they’d be getting paid pretty handsomely. It makes me wonder what kind of mission it...is...*suddenly stops next to a magazine stall*
Ruby: Blake? *scroll pings* Well, good news! Yang’s back from her mission!
Blake: *distracted* Mmhmm.... *snatches the magazine out of the display, turns stiffly, and struts with a purpose back to the bungalow*
Ruby: What was that all about? *notices the magazine display* Oh, Dust....
Back at the RWBY, Schnee, and Belladonna shared bungalow.
Weiss: I don’t see why you’re nervous, Yang. I said I’d spot you the money.
Yang: I know, but your reserves are limited now that Atlas is gone. I don’t want you to waste money on me. Plus, this is something I needed to do myself. *nervously polishes a pair of homemade, gold earrings*
Weiss: I still can’t believe you opted to make those yourself instead of just buying a pair. It would have been cheaper, and you wouldn’t have to worry about how Blake will react to-
The door to the bungalow bursts open to a steely eyed Blake glowering into the dusky interior. Weiss and Yang cling to each other, screaming like children.
Blake’s eyes bore into Yang’s soul as she rings the magazine in her hands like a wet washrag. “I see your mission went well.” She slaps the magazine onto the table.
All the blood drained from Yang’s face as she stared at the magazine. A bead of sweat started to form on her temple. “Huh, I-I wasn’t expecting them to publish this so quickly.”
On the cover is a slightly awkward yet provocative Yang dressed in a pair of ripped and faded, tan work pants with suspenders hanging loosely at her hips. Soot and ash coated her skin in random places while others were left completely clean. Abs and arms were on full display as they held an armful of puppies and kittens in front of her otherwise naked chest. A cowboy boonie hat was placed on her head and a soft smile and wink was painted on her face.
The title “Bushfire Huntress” popped off the page in stark contrast to the otherwise dark background. "Interview with the Golden Huntress Yang XiaoLong, and friends about the mission to put out the seemingly untameable bush fires of the outback."
A feral growl rumbled in Blake’s chest. She was about to say something when Weiss spoke up from her seat.
“Blake, I know this is unorthodox-”
“My girlfriend flaunting herself on the cover of some smut magazine like I’m not enough attention for her is more than just unorthodox,” Blake cut with a snarl. Her eyes never leaving Yang.
“But!” Weiss continued. “She did it for a good reason. Albeit, she was stupid about how she did it.”
Blake shifted her gaze to her best friend before turning back to Yang. “You have thirty seconds to explain.”
Yang sat frozen in her seat.
“You have twenty seconds,” Blake counted off.
Yang suddenly snapped out of stupor. “I needed the money so I could buy more materials to make you something special!” She all but shrieked. “I was talking to Coco and Velvet when we were out, and Coco suggested I pose for some photos with Bushfire Huntress magazine. It paid well and would only take a few hours!”
Blake watched as Yang continued to spew word vomit everywhere on one breath. She would have been lying if she said she wasn’t impressed by her girlfriend’s breath control. Granted, this wouldn’t be the first time she’s been surprised in that aspect.
“Weiss would have spotted me the money,” she continued, “but I didn’t want to put more strain on her already limited resources! This was something important, and I wanted to make sure it was perfect! She also suggested I just buy them instead of make them myself. It would have saved on money and materials, but-”
“Pause,” Blake stated, holding her hand up. “Buy what? What could be so important that you felt the need to sell burlesque pictures of yourself for money?”
Yang rubbed the back of her neck and fiddled with the small jewelry box in her hand. “Well, I, uh, wanted to do this in a more...well...romantic setting... But, I was talking to your mom about some Menagerian traditions-”
Blake felt her spine fuse ramrod straight. Her ears sprung to attention and a flush colored her cheeks. What did her mom tell Yang? What did Yang want to do? Oh, shoot! Yang was still talking!
“-and I wanted to make these myself so I could, um, ask you to...to...” Yang looked like she was about to faint or throw up. She took a deep, steady breath before getting out of her chair and kneeling in front of Blake. She held up the jewelry box and opened it. Two, gold studded earrings with traditional Menagerian engravings etched into the metal winked up at Blake.
“to...maybe...marry me?”
Blake didn’t respond. Instead, she fell to her knees and threw her arms around Yang’s neck, toppling the two of them to the floor. Tears of joy were streaming down her face as she kissed her now fiancée relentlessly.
The Fabric Argument Is Dumb
I am working on a pair of pants and wanted to listen to some sewing and fashion related content whilst doing so.
A compilation of fat activists saying there's a fat tax and that the material cost difference of fabric used for a small size and like, a 5XL is minimal came along and this wasn't the first time I heard the argument but this was an entire compilation of it and I just want to share how stupid it is as someone who actually makes her own clothes.
Remember my self-made coat I posted this summer?
I mentioned before that the fabric was expensive. Do you know how much it cost me?
30 euro's per meter and I needed about 2 meters for my coat. If I have to calculate the other expenses into it like the hundreds of beads, that coat most have costed me about 75 euro's to make.
I've never seen a 5XL garment, but lets be generous and says its only twice the amount of fabric I'd need to recreate that coat for someone with that size.
That would be 150 euro's and I'm not even counting needing a different pattern to make it look flattering on a large body.
Can you see how big the difference of cost is depending on the origin of the fabric needing to be used?
And as someone who grew up in poverty and needs to save for months in order to buy some of these expensive fabrics, I would never think of levelling the expenses by charging thin people just as much when I don't even have to spend a hundred euro's to make clothes for them.
That idea just feels weirdly greedy and I simply wish to be paid for my labor and have it cover my material cost if I ever were to make clothes as a business.
Life is simply unfair and if I need to spend hundreds of euro's on material cost to make someone with a 5XL a pretty coat, then you'd better be willing to pay for it.
I'd low-key like to partner with someone in the fashion industry someday and bring more exclusive kind of designs to the market with a price range affordable even to people from lower incomes if they saved a little like I do myself right now. I wouldn't be able to if I'd price them all like I'd price a 5X.
I am not giving up my literal ambitions for larger sized people.
As someone nearly done on the illustrations on her picture book and wants to work in children's media, I already came up with ideas to make toy playsets cheaper so its easier for poor families to buy them for their kids for Christmas.
That is my dream, to give people products they normally couldn't buy with a small budget and give people some guidance and warmth in my IPs as sappy enough, I want to make the world a better place with a huge focus on children as they are our future and poor kids get a worse future then well-off kids.
I want to be the fairy godmother I never had.
You don't get to take that away from me because you're angry I'd charge you 220 when I'd charge a thin person like a 95.
